About Bicycles NYC

New York City's Go To East Side Family Shop.

Mission Statement

For 46 years, our family-owned bicycle shop on the East side has been a cornerstone of the NYC cycling community, dedicating ourselves to fostering a love for biking among families and individuals alike. Specializing in family-oriented bikes, cutting-edge electric bicycles, vibrant kids' bikes, and a wide array of accessories, our mission is to provide not just a product, but an experience that enhances the joy and freedom of cycling for everyone. Rooted deeply in our beloved neighborhood, we pride ourselves on offering personalized, caring support to our customers, helping to build a healthier, more connected community on two wheels. We are more than a bike shop; we are a family, committed to keeping the spirit of adventure alive in the heart of New York City.

Our History

Larry DuffusIn early 1977, Jeff Loewi & Larry Duffus were working on the Upper East Side of New York City and as managers and mechanics at one of the first bike shops in NYC to successfully sell both "10 speeds" and "3-speeds." Larry was a wizard who had never met a bicycle, motorcycle or car he couldn't quickly diagnose and repair. He was a native Jamaican, a self-made man who had owned his own business in Kingston, Jamaica before coming to the US. Jeff was a guitar playing, folk singing, Pete Seeger wannabe, a Greenwich Village refugee and a drifting Columbia University graduate.

Bicycles NYC in New York, NYA New NYC Bike Shop is Born

With their odd couple synergy, Larry & Jeff agreed that it made perfect sense to combine forces. In the winter of 1977 they quit their jobs and opened a tiny 400 sq/ft bicycle shop on 85th Street just east of 3rd Avenue. They called their bike store Larry & Jeff's Bicycles Plus. Mutt & Jeff, as they were affectionately called, worked many long days to build what soon became a thriving and respected business.

Expansion

In the freezing cold winter of 1982, Jeff moved from the 85th St location to open a second location, this time on 3rd Avenue between 79th and 80th Streets. So now we had 2 great bike shops and we prospered.

Several years later, Larry left 85th Street store to open what is now known as Larry's Bicycles Plus at 2nd Avenue. Over time and in separate locations, their original connection faded. Larry is now the owner and sole proprietor of Larry's Freewheeling and Jeff, that's me, remains at 3rd Avenue in what has is ever so slowly transitioning to the new business name of Bicycles NYC. (Although we still proudly answer to Larry & Jeff's or Bicycles Plus or Larry & Jeff's Bicycles Plus) Although we have been separated professionally for the nearly 23 years we will always remain friends and hopefully friendly competitors. Stop by and see us.

Meet the Staff

Sam

Sam

The Commander and Chief of Bicycles NYC. Sam is a cycling shoe guy, bike fitter, father of 3 and likes Donuts.  If you want to know about toting 3 kids around the city by bike or need help with a difficult to fit foot, Sam is your guy.

Will

Will

William "Papo" Cruz is the oldest remaining employee of Bicycles NYC.  A 25+ year mechanic.  William is a kind, helpful, reasonable fellow who loves the Yankees, MotoGP, and his 9 children.  When Will is in the store, it's always a chill place to be.

Shane

A 30 year industry veteran.  Shane has forgotten more than most will ever know.  He has a knack for turning over every stone to find a unique part.  A dedicated father, cycling enthusiast, and lover of all things Hip Hop, Shane will help you in any way he can.

Rob

Sam claims that Rob is "The most gifted natural mechanic" he's ever met.  That's saying a lot given Sam's degree in motorcycle mechanics.  Hailing from Webster Ave in the Bronx, Rob is our bulldog.  He doesn't pull punches and tells it straight.  He's a sweet fellow with a tough exterior and a heart of gold.

Oscar

Hardcore Columbian cyclist is what comes to mind when describing Oscar.  Always happy, laughing, and friendly are what you'll see when Oscar is in the shop.  The only more pure climber is probably Nairo. When Oscar isn't working he's either re-watching Peaky Blinders or climbing Bear Mtn for the 5th time.

Paulo

Paulo will go out of his way to help. The Filipino way is strong with him in his mannerisms, cooking and happy attitude.  Paulo knows every word to every song, is a competent home cook and humble guy. Don't hesitate ask Paulo for advice!
